Gem of a Country : Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka proverbially acquired a maxim as the pearl of the Indian Ocean – may be as there are many a pearl around the island anytime to be called and picked. Then, the ‘grainery of the east’ this is a befitting testimony to our olden day farmers for their adroit competence in their capacity to work – now, to say recently we have become the owner of the heaviest, costliest, invaluable and priceless gem – the ‘Gem of the world’ beating all Guinness records.

The highest peak’s elevation is around 8000 feet above sea level. From the low levels to the high levels, the mounds and molds, hammocks and hillocks, hinterlands and highlands and hills, cliffs and bluffs – all in all are luxuriously cultivated with tea – the products enterprisingly acquire the name and position, name and fame as the ‘best’ in the world.

Sri Lanka has been called by the name as a pygmy of a country, geographically a tiny dot in the world map. But historically we hold and bear the richest and the most exclusive and elaborate historic values of civilization ranging from knowledge and intelligence that prevailed in the olden day. Our civilization travels into many a century. The means and mechanisms of construction and engineering, irrigation and agriculture, arts and crafts – amazingly are far above than that of the present day. The ruins of the past that have been maintained carefully are the testimonies.

Climatically we hold a unique position within the length of 435km and a breadth of 240km with only area of 65,610km2  We can experience warm and hot, cold and cool within a couple of hours when travelling through the country.

The fauna and flora of the bust, shrub and jungle that surrounds the cultivation seasonally from the summit sloping for several acres across folds and valleys are rivers of flowers of different kinds and species in radiant bloom – the profusion of color from the palest ivory to the deepest lemon, looks as though the sun has tipped over and spilt gold down the mountain side.

The hotels, restaurants and take away stalls, catering for all types and kinds of personnel – the illustrious and the noble, the rich and the affluent, the aristocrats and the hoi-polloi and the haves and the have-nots for all there is service and accommodation. Diverse and multi-fold selection and preferences for types of lives, you call it – in wilderness, wild life, sanctuary and retreat, seaside and beach front or in the main city of commercial value, enjoying night clubs and casinos and chilled out pubs.

The star pelleted sandy beach with its silky and sensual inner sand emanating the salty and spicy smell, brings forth the feeling of wet warmth giving so much of comfort, delight and ease to the bare hands, feet and body. The heavy waves that propel, project and pitch with an echo, hurls from the mid sea and curves, curls and crumps down towards the shore in snail pace; reaching the end of the beach to stretch on like a carpet. The contact the beach lodgers get, makes and urges them to get in to action. Walk, run, play, plunge – dip, dive, duck and douse – swim and float, boat and cruise and ski and surf – along the perfect beaches this gem of a land offers.
